Heartburn describes a burning sensation felt in the chest or stomach that occurs when the stomach’s food contents flow backward into the oesophagus (the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach), and is often experienced when our defence mechanisms – the lining of our stomach and oesophagus – are vulnerable. A healthy lining in the stomach and oesophagus is an effective defence against acid reflux. Mindfulness eating practices may be effective in reducing symptoms. While eating, pay attention to the colours and textures of your food. Chew slowly and remove distractions such as TV, phones and computers to reduce the likelihood of overeating.
Sleep Upright
Sleeping in an upright position may help to reduce the flow of stomach acid back into the oesophagus.
Avoid trigger foods
Some foods are more likely than others to trigger heartburn. Some foods that may cause heartburn include fried or spicy foods and carbonated drinks.
